The beer that brought the brewing world to attention, IPA literally stands for India Pale Ale and the West Coast variety of this beer indicates that you can expect a beer that is deep golden yellow to light amber golden in colour, clear in appearance, hoppy, clean and STRONGER than your average old pale ale. Our Keg King Brewing West Coast IPA Beer Kit delivers on all these expectations just on its own or go ahead and treat yourself to some extra hops so you can dryhop this kit and get extra flavour and aroma.
If you are a lager drinker, if you like light beers with subdued character then when you first try a West Coast IPA it’s either going to explode your head or you’ll dive head first into your newest flavour fixation. This beer is brewed to be a touch stronger with a fresh hop aroma of citrus, grapefruit and pine.
Our ‘Westy’ is a genuine example of the beer style that California breweries like Anchor, Sierra Nevada, Stone and Karl Straus made popular in the late 1980s to early 1990s. While the beer style itself was derived from English Ales that were brewed stronger and hopped heavier to preserve them in barrels during long sea voyages in the late 1700’s, the brewers of the first West Coast IPAs matched that very same strong ale style paired with the emerging new world West Coast variety hops being grown in Northern California up into Oregon and Washington. With this new craft brewing revolution there were suddenly a wealth of IPAs on offer that balanced a heavier malt backbone to hang the resinous, piney, citrus hop flavours from while still maintaining a clean, bitterness that’s satisfying to complete the full spectrum of sensations in your glass.
Once you get a hankering for making your own IPAs you’ll always be able to start from our Keg King West Coast IPA Beer Kits. Jump in and get some extra hops to throw in during and after fermentation to experiment with different aroma hops, the world of ‘C’ hops like Citra, Cascade, Columbus, Centennial, Comet and so many more amazing signature hops like Mosaic, Simcoe, Superdelic, Eclipse or any show off hop you like. While the kit is perfectly well rounded just on it’s own you can push it to the limit with this ever evolving IPA style by changing up the yeast and dryhopping to your heart’s content. We’d suggest Bluestone San Diego, Michigan or London, Safale US 05, BRY97, Verdant or Mangrove Jack’s M66 Hophead Ale Yeast.
